You’ll need a detailed understanding of the dimensions of your room and the kinds of cabinets you want to incorporate. Because you don’t want too many conflicting patterns and color schemes, make sure that your cabinets pair well with the bathroom countertops you choose.

Material Matters
When it comes to bathroom cabinets, material matters a great deal, perhaps more so than in any other room in the house. The material your bathroom cabinets are made of needs to withstand moisture, grime, and even mildew. The high humidity that is a natural feature of any bathroom can cause some cabinet materials to warp or stain, so be mindful of that and consult the professionals when choosing materials for your bathroom cabinets. Having appropriate and sufficient ventilation can also help.
Because of these stipulations, bathroom cabinets are often made from solid treated wood, plywood, and medium density fiberboard. Cabinets made of solid wood like maple and oak are hardy even in bathroom humidity when they are properly sealed and painted. There is some risk of expansion or swelling if the wood is not sealed correctly. Solid-type plywoods do not expand as much as natural woods, and medium density fiberboard does have the tendency to warp when it gets too wet.
If you are really on a budget, you might consider particle board cabinets, perhaps combined with solid wood drawers. These will not be of the quality or durability of other custom cabinet materials.
Kinds of Bathroom Cabinets
How do you want your cabinets staged in your bathroom? You have many different options, including whether or not you want your cabinets attached to the wall or freestanding. Choose a layout that works within the amount of space you have—not cramming in too many cabinets—while still providing adequate space for whatever you need stored in the room.
The most common kinds of bathroom cabinets include storage under the sink and cabinets mounted on the wall, often behind mirrors. For both of these options, weight must be a consideration. Storing things that are too heavy in a mounted cabinet runs the risk of pulling the cabinet off the wall, while sink-supporting cabinets must be strong enough to bear the weight of whatever the countertop is made of. They must also accommodate the sink and the associated plumbing.
Another option is to set up banks of cabinets along one wall or more for extra storage for towels and soaps and toilet paper. If you want to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your bathroom, consider incorporating a vanity. These are typically freestanding features that can make any bathroom layout pop.
